150 Years of Rail to Helensville

In 1875 access to Helensville was opened up with the arrival of the railway, which ran between Riverhead and Helensville. To travel further North, the best option was a boat up the Kaipara River and across the treacherous Kaipara Harbour. Finally, in 1925, the railway took us North to Whangārei

A little about the museum

The Helensville Railway Station and Museum will be open both 4th and 5th October celebrating 150 years of railways to Te Awaroa Helensville.

We have several updated displays at the museum including our operating model railway layout which depicts the Helensville station and surrounding countryside in the mid 20th century. We also recently added several new railway signalling and train control displays.

During the festival weekend we will have Sammy the Steam Engine giving rides around the station car park. Rides on Sammy and the cost of Museum admission is free for those with tickets to the Helensville Heritage weekend.
